The Living Altar

$33.00

An altar can be a place of prayer, meditation, remembrance, divination, devotion, seasonal observance, or ritual transformation. It does not need to be elaborate, expensive, or permanently displayed. A meaningful altar begins with purpose.

In this hands-on class, Sebastian guides participants through the creation of a personal altar for everyday spiritual practice or intentional ritual work. Participants will explore different types of altars, including devotional, ancestral, seasonal, elemental, meditative, divinatory, and temporary ritual altars. The class will also consider the historical and cultural differences between household shrines, religious altars, and the altars used in modern witchcraft.

Participants will learn how to select and arrange meaningful objects, establish a focal point, work safely with candles or incense, incorporate tarot or oracle cards, and adapt an altar to lunar or seasonal observances. Attention will be given to creating an altar that supports an actual practice rather than becoming only a decorative display.

Each participant will design, through sketching, a simple altar and develop a brief practice that can be repeated at home, such as lighting a candle, drawing a card, offering a prayer, sitting in meditation, or acknowledging a deity, ancestor, spirit, or seasonal change.
